John and Sue welcome you to their delightful 18th century cottage in the picturesque village of EGLETON on the shores of RUTLAND WATER. Egleton is famous for its BIRD SANCTUARY and is host to the internationally renowned ANNUAL BRITISH BIRDWATCHING FAIR each summer. Forge Cottage is situated at the entrance to the BIRD WATCHING CENTRE as well as sitting alongside the cycle path that runs round the Lake. RUTLAND WATER is wonderful for fishing (trout), sailing & windsurfing, walking & cycling (hire shops & clubs connected to these activities are to be found on both the north & south shores of the Lake).
RUTLAND is the smallest county in England. The county town of OAKHAM boasts many stylish and independent shops and boutiques. The bustling market held every Wednesday and Saturday is still very prominent and placed next to Oakham Castle where once a month you can still find the farmers' market in its grounds. Just a couple of miles down the lane from Egleton, Oakham's fine selection of restaurants will cater for everyone's needs or for those searching deeper into the county we are served by many traditional English village pubs. A 6 mile drive to our other market town of UPPINGHAM is also rich in small, smart shops, pubs and restaurants.
Close to Egleton is GEOFF HAMILTON'S BARNSDALE GARDENS, BURGHLEY HOUSE (BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS), ROCKINGHAM CASTLE & TOLETHORPE HALL (famous for its' Open Air Theatre) and for that special treat afternoon tea at HAMBLETON HALL (1 mile) or THE GEORGE HOTEL, Stamford (10 miles) is a must!
